US does not seek to establish military base in Yemen
Yemen-USA, Military, 5/29/1998
Commander of the US troops in the Middle East, Anthony Zinni, currently visiting Yemen said that his country does not seek to set up a military base in Yemen and will not think of doing so.
Zinni was quoted today as saying that his country's sole concern is to develop relations with Yemen and bilateral military participation in exchanging training and expertise.
Concerning stability in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, Zinni added that the Red Sea is a key communications route linking the Suez Canal to Bab al-Mandib, adding that its importance is not confined to the US and the countries of the region, but is also of great interest to world trade.
He expressed his country's hope to establish stability in the region by peaceful means and through cooperation with regional states.
