Sudanese opposition in Cairo for uprising against al-Bashir
Sudan, Politics, 5/28/1998

Leadership of the Sudanese Democratic National Coalition, which comprises parties of the northern opposition and southern rebels, will hold the first meeting of its kind in Cairo to discuss means of organizing an "uprising to topple the Sudanese regime," according to coalition spokesman Farouk Abu Issa.

He added that "discussions will center on means of reactivating our efforts inside Sudan to make an uprising" that would topple Sudanese President Omar Bashir. He added that the meetings of the coalition leadership and its executive council for the first time outside in Asmara, which accommodates the headquarters of the coalition established in 1996, will also deal with efforts exerted by IFAD, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, to end the civil war taking place in Sudan since 1983.

He added his coalition was not "pleased" with the question of the referendum debated during peace negotiations in Nairobi held under the auspices of IFAD. He asserted that he "opposes the separation of Southern Sudan."

Meanwhile, the Sudanese opposition stated that it killed 204 government soldiers and another 150 were held as captives in battles which took place during the last three weeks in the Blue Nile province, in the east of the country. The opposition added that the campaigns it has launched since May 5 against government troops enabled to control an additional 700 square km.
