Egypt-Regional, Politics, 5/28/1998
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa warned that the international nuclear non-proliferation treaty is currently in danger, requiring that this treaty include the entire Middle East region, including Israel, because of the danger presented by the current situation in this region.
Answering reporters' questions concerning the repercussions on the Middle East region of the nuclear explosions conducted by India and Pakistan, Moussa said that the explosions added to the region of south Asia two nuclear powers, but the situation there is different than that in the Middle East region, which requires the establishment of region free from nuclear weapons as an indispensable basis for maintaining regional security.
Moussa emphasized that the main point to maintaining regional security by preventing the spread of nuclear weapons in ME and to have Israel sign the nuclear nonproliferation treaty.
He referred to the Egyptian President Mubarak's initiative and that of Egypt as a whole in 1974 in this respect. Moussa stated that this is an important and serious issue and that unless the system for preventing the spread of nuclear technology becomes an effective one, action is necessary on this issue.
