talks to hold an Arab mini-summit
Regional, Politics, 5/28/1998

Arab diplomatic sources said there are high-level communications underway between Arab leaders in order to hold an Arab mini-summit.

The sources also told ArabicNews.com that the summit will comprise Egypt, Syria, Oman, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Palestine and Lebanon and that it will tackle Israeli violations in Jerusalem, especially Israeli military actions in the city which the Arab countries consider a violation of UN and security council resolutions.

The sources added that the current communications between the Arab leaders address the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations within the general deterioration of the peace process and the Arab plan for confronting the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that aim at undermining peace in the whole region.

The sources said communications are currently ongoing to specify the day and place in which the mini-summit will be held, either in Cairo or Syria, adding that there is no problem over the place for holding the summit.

Meanwhile, Jordanian Foreign Minister Jawad al-Anani announced yesterday that Egypt and Jordan are currently discussing several alternatives for confronting the peace crisis. These alternatives include the call for a comprehensive Arab summit or an international conference for rescuing peace.

Anani pointed out that the suggested conference has to concentrate on implementing peace agreements and to work on ratifying the principal of a comprehensive solution along all negotiation tracks (Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian).

Also, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa stated that the Arab states and the international community will not leave the peace process and the stability of the region in the hands of Israel to destroy it through its absolute negativity towards peace.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has called for an Arab summit to discuss the deadlock in the Middle East peace process.
