Syria-Regional, Culture, 5/28/1998
The first international conference on Middle East archaeology, which concluded its deliberations in Rome, has asserted that Israeli archaeological excavations works and surveys carried out in the Golan are illegal, describing them as contradicting international laws and regulations, including UNESCO regulations which ban excavation in occupied territories.
The conference which was held on May 18-23 highlighted news on research and finds in different Middle East areas, including the archaeological finds discovered in Syria during the past few years.
The participants confirmed the necessity of reviewing the history of the region to include Syria's original and distinguished role in the creation and development of ancient civilizations.
The Syrian delegation to the conference was led by the director of the antiquities and museums department at the Ministry of Culture, Sultan Muheisan, who lectured on recent Syrian archaeological findings.
