Iraq delegation heads to Tehran
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 5/28/1998

An Iraqi source said that an Iraqi delegation headed today to Tehran in order to hold talks with Iranian officials on the normalization of relations between the two countries, saying that the delegation which is headed by Foreign Ministry undersecretary Saad Abdul Meguid El-Faised will discuss in Iran methods of improving relations between the two countries and solving the pending problems that obstruct progress in bilateral relations.

The source also added that the visit comes within a program to which Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Said al-Sahaf agreed to during his visit to the Iranian capital at the beginning of the current year.

The last talks held between the two countries regarding normalization faced difficulties with issues relating to the problem of the prisoners of war exchange, an outstanding issue as a result of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

Meanwhile, the Arab - Kurdish talks' symposium continued in Cairo under the leadership of the secretary-general of the Kurdish National Union, in which number of Iraqi and Kurdish personalities beside number of solidarity committees and Arab personalities from Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and Libya are participating. The symposium tackles the Kurds' situation in Iraq within the concept of a united Iraq.
