Garang will not attend opposition meeting in Cairo
Sudan, Politics, 5/27/1998

The head of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, John Garang, informed the head of the Sudanese opposition Democratic National Assembly, Mohammed Osman, that he will not be able to attend the meeting of the opposition's leadership in exile, which is to be held for the first time in Cairo.

The representatives of the SPLA in Cairo denied that Garang's absence is related to the opposition's position, yet the northern opposition said that the justification for missing the meeting given by Garang in his apology was not convincing.

The opposition informed Garang that it is ready to postpone the meeting for days because of the importance of his participation in the meeting, which will tackle the agreement reached with the government in Nairobi which cleared the way for self-determination for the south.

Garang adhered to his position and sent a delegation to represent him.
