Message from Chirac to president al-Assad
Syria-France, Politics, 5/27/1998
Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Tuesday received a message from French President Jacques Chirac, conveyed during talks with director of the Middle East and North Africa department at the French Foreign Ministry, Jean Claude Coesseran. Talks dealt with the Middle East peace process and obstacles placed by the Israeli government to obstruct its progress.
President Assad stressed Syria's adherence to the Middle East peace process on the grounds of the Madrid Conference's terms of reference, UN resolutions and the cohesion between the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.
Coesseran extended an invitation from Chirac to President Assad to visit France. The President accepted it and promised to make his visit at a convenient date for both sides. Bilateral relations were discussed during the meeting.
Earlier in the day, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa discussed with the French envoy conditions in the region in light of the stumbled peace process as a result of Netanyahu's stubborn policy. Bilateral relations and means of consolidating them were also reviewed.
