Sudanese government approves of opposition conference in Cairo
Sudan, Politics, 5/26/1998
Khartoum approved today the conference of the Sudanese opposition in Cairo, saying it prefers to hold such conferences in the Egyptian capital instead of the Eritrean capital, Asmara.
Abdullah Soliman El-Awad, from the national conference in Sudan, said that the temporary tension in Egyptian - Sudanese relations, does not prevent the approval of Sudan toward convening the Sudanese opposition's meeting in Cairo at the end of current month.
El-Awad said the meeting supports the Egyptian role in concealing the points of view between the government and its opposition as a preliminary step toward solving the Sudanese problem.
He said that Cairo is a better site for the meetings than Asmara, in which the opposition held all its previous meetings, referring to the role of Asmara in creating the war in Sudan.
He added that the Sudanese leadership is not worried anout the meeting of the opposition's conference that will be held for first time in the Egyptian capital.
The Sudanese opposition has announced that the "democratic national coalition" which comprises parties of the North's opposition and the Southern rebellions will meet on Wednesday in Cairo for the first time since its establishment in Asmara in 1996. However, convening the meeting in due time is linked with the participation of Commander of the "people's army for liberation of Sudan" John Garang, now in Southern Sudan.
