Israeli flagrant disregard to international law continues in Syrian Golan
Syria-Regional, Politics, 5/26/1998

The Arab League has strongly condemned an Israeli announcement that it plans to build 400 housing units in 14 Israeli settlements in the occupied Golan Syrian Heights.

AL Assistant Secretary General for Arab affairs in charge of the Golan file, Bin Hali, said in a statement in Cairo on Monday that while the Middle East peace process is deadlocked on all tracks due to Israel's "flagrant arrogance,"
the Likud government is making a new provocation by seeking to expand settlements in the Golan.

He said that Israel plans to bring in new settlers with a view to perpetuating the status quo and changing demographic, legal and construction conditions. Bin Hale added: "It is high time for the international community and the two peace cosponsors to put an end to Israeli stubbornness and to Netanyahu's colonial policy and violation of the international laws as well as undermining the peace process and of pushing the region into the verge of violence thereby threatening the regional and world peace."

The AL official noted the resolve of the Syrians in the occupied Golan Heights in their adherence to the Syrian identity. The AL renewed all-out and firm support for Syria in its stand to restore all the Golan in line with the principles of the peace process and international legitimacy resolutions.
