Arafat speaks at anniversary of occupation, Gingrich reconsiders visit
Palestine-Regional, Politics, 5/25/1998

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat will deliver tomorrow a speech at Arab League headquarters before the delegates and ambassadors of foreign and Arab countries, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the occupation of Palestine.

Palestine's permanent delegate at the Arab League told ArabicNews.com, "Arafat will inform the foreign and Arab ambassadors in Egypt and in the league on the results of 50 years of destruction and displacement for the Palestinian people".

Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid, said that speaker of the US House of Representatives Newt Gingrich's decision not to visit the possible future location of the US embassy in Jerusalem saved the area from great risks, emphasizing that Jerusalem forms a "red line" and its destiny is a subject of final status negotiations.

US House of Representatives speaker said that the reconsideration of his visit to the site was due to requests by U.S. White House officials and those of U.S. National Security Advisor Sandy Burger.

Abdul Meguid considered the cancellation of the visit a good sign and urged the US government to stop spoiling Israel with its double standard policy.
