Non-Aligned Movement countries to Israel: implement U.N. resolutions
Regional-Non-Aligned Movement, Politics, 5/22/1998

In the conference's final statement in Cartagena, on Wednesday the Non Alligned Movement (NAM) countries foreign ministers stressed their respective countries' support for the right of Syria to restore the occupied Golan Heights according to peace principles established in Madrid, international legitimacy resolutions and the land for peace formula. They urged Israel to honor all the obligations it has committed itself to and to resume negotiations from the point at which they broke off.

The NAM foreign ministers condemned all measures taken by Israel to change the demographic conditions of the Syrian Golan Heights. They urged Israel to abide by UN Security Council resolution no. 497 from 1981, providing for full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights to June 1967 borderlines according to UN resolutions 242 and 338.

The ministers called for pressuring Israel on the regional and international levels to commit itself to the Madrid conference terms of reference and to fully carry out all reached agreements and obligations with sides concerned. The ministers, moreover, expressed deep concern over the continued Israeli aggressions against south Lebanon, stressing the need for immediate and unconditional Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon and the western Bekaa to the internationally recognized border according to UN resolution 425 of 1978.

The statement expressed deep concern over the Israeli-Turkish military alliance, the Turkish incursion into the Iraqi territories, Israeli-Turkish military exercises and their grave consequences on the region as a whole.

They voiced support for making the Middle East a zone free from weapons of mass distruction and called on Israel, as the only country in the Middle East which did not join the Nuclear weapons Non-Proliferation Treaty, to join it immediately.
