Hussein: media is not accurate, prosecution cases to be dropped
Jordan, Politics, 5/21/1998

King Hussein of Jordan met with members of the legislative, executive and judicial bodies all together for the first time. The king called for a new framework of cooperation among the three bodies.

"A great deal of injustice was done to Jordan," the king said addressing the meeting. "Jordan did not receive enough credit for the role it had played in the Arab-Israeli wars," he said. "Recent programs by Arab satellite channels are based on false and inaccurate information," the king stated.

A few Arab satellite TV channels have recently broadcast anti-Hashemite programs saying that the Jordanian army under their leadership did not pay heavily in 1948 to defend Palestine, but, "It saved the West Bank and Jerusalem," the King said.

Following the meeting the King of Jordan met with deputies from the southern Jordanian city of Maan which witnessed pro-Iraqi riots in February. The king told the representatives that cases pending against several Maani rioters would be dropped.

The King recently met with Jordan's professional associations, who strongly oppose Jordan's peace with Israel and ban any dealings with Israel. He said, "Jordan remains committed to peace." Regarding normalization relations with Israel, king Hussein told the three Jordanian bodies that whoever does not want to implement relations with Israel is free to do so, "It is not so disappointing a matter," he said.

King Hussein expressed frustration at the deadlock in the Middle East peace process and he strongly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's attitude, saying, "The peace process is to continue and will achieve its goals," despite Netanyahu.

Concerning domestic issues the king told the members of the three Jordanian bodies meeting yesterday that, "reassessment of policies and plans is needed in various sectors." The king left Jordan for the UK for a several day visit following the joint meeting.
