Iraq acuses U.S. of spying and prolonging sanctions
Iraq, Politics, 5/21/1998

Iraq condemned yesterday the U.S. attempt at making the oil-for-food agreement a permanent agreement, stating that it aims at retaining the sanctions that has been imposed on Iraq since 1990.

At the opening of the Iraq Geology Conference, in a statement he delivered on behalf of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Abd Ghani El-Ghafour, a leading member of the ruling Baath party said that "America wants to keep the sanctions imposed on Iraq as a continuation in harming the Iraq people and as an attempt not to allow them to stand."

Abd El-Ghani referred to reports about Washington's attempt to prolong the oil-for-food agreements to 18 months instead of the current six-month period under which the agreement comes up for review.

He added, "The U.S.A uses the special committee of the U.N. which is authorized to disarm Iraq of mass destruction weapons as an espionage tool against Iraq and its national security in order to prolong the siege."
