The Kuwait foreign minister's resignation
Kuwait, Politics, 5/19/1998

Kuwaiti sources confirmed today to ArabicNews.com that the Kuwaiti first deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed, presented his resignation and that the Royal family is continuing its efforts to persuade him to change his mind concerning the resignation.

The sources said that al-Sabah's resignation is due to a dispute concerning the Cabinet's role in managing Kuwait's interior affairs and the disputes concerning the resolutions for economic reform taken by the previous government and disapproved by the new government.

The sources added that Shiekh Sabah al-Ahmed is convinced that the reform policy advocated by the government will not be successful, as it increases fuel prices and imposes fees on some services.

The sources also added that Shiekh Sabah was arranging to leave Kuwait to avoid the pressure on him to change his mind concerning his resignation, but he could not due the death of the previous defense minister's son, Hamoud Ahmed Hamoud al-Sabah, 23.

Other sources related the reasons for the resignation to issues concerning maintaining the country's respect in "implementing its resolutions." The sources also pointed out that Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed did not receive Palestinian Hamas leader Shiekh Yassin during his visit to Kuwait last week, and that is another factor.

Yet another speculation by the newspaper Kuwaiti Policy said Shiekh Sabah's resignation was expected, pointing out that the formation of the recent ministrial cabinet did not include all the political factions and ignored the delicate balance of power between the effective political forces in the country.
