El-Ghazali confirmes Libya mediation between Sudan and the Opposition
Libya-Sudan, Politics, 5/15/1998

In press statements yesterday the Libyan minister of unity, Gomea El-Ghazali, confirmed the continuation of the Libyan mediation between the Sudanese government and opposition in order to achieve reconciliation.

El-Ghazali said, "I talked to President Omar El-Bashir, to El-Sadiq El-Mahdi the leader of Hezb El-Oma, to Mohammed Othman El-Merghani the leader of Democratic Unionist Party about how dangerous it is to resort to weapons to solve a political issue."

He said it is important for discussion to reach practical results, adding that Libya directed an official invitation to the leader of the southern rebellion John Garang to visit.

El-Ghazali stated that the date for the visit is not yet determined and it is only Garang's decision.

The spokesman of the Sudanese People's Liberation movement, Yasser Arman, confirmed on Friday to the London-based al-Hayat newspaper that the leader of the movement, Colonel John Garang has received an invitation to visit Libya, and he will pay that visit soon.

The spokesman said a delegation from the movement will head to Libya as a preliminary step for the visit, adding that Garang will travel to Tripoli soon because the chance is available now because of his current communications.
