Arab League praises Hillary Clinton's attitude
Regional, Politics, 5/13/1998

The secretary-general of the Arab League, Esmat Abdul Meguid, hailed today comments by the U.S. president's wife, Hillary Clinton, in support of the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Abdul Meguid expressed the anxiety of the Arab League and its member countries toward the deadlock witnessed by the peace process. He said, "The Israeli government is responsible for the failure of the London conference in reaching positive results on the Palestinian track, and its (Israel's) refusal of the U.S. initiative which led to the Washington summit's cancellation."

He also said, "The Israeli government's maneuvers aim at killing the peace process and it exposes the whole area to violence and chaos," adding that the current situation requires the U.S. and Russia as the peace process' two sponsors to firmly and effectively confront Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's maneuvers and procrastination.
