Arab Energy Conference resumes deliberations

The sixth Arab Energy Conference continued its deliberations on Tuesday. The conferees discussed the question of local consumption of energy and Arab oil exports.
A paper discussed the benifits of linking the grids in neighboring Arab countries as a basic step toward upgrading the efficiency of electrical energy systems and rationalizing investments in the key sector.
Other papers highlighted the importance of research and development in the exploration for and production of petroleum and the role played by modern technology in production increases and cost cutting.
OPEC's work paper, read by its secretary-general said the link between economic growth and environment is a very complicated issue and needs to be studied carefully.
He spoke of the issues of environment and development and the adverse effects of the recent Kyoto protocol on the oil market and development world-wide, adding that the damages resulting from the application of the protocol should be borne equally by both industrial and producing countries.
