Syrian PNF meets on latest Middle East developments
Syria, Politics, 5/12/1998
Chaired by Syrian Vice-President Muhammad Zuheir Masharqa, the Progressive National Front central leadership held a meeting on Monday.
Participants in the meeting listened to a report read by the prime minister on the sixth Arab Energy conference being held in Damascus.
He stressed Syria's stand, based on the achievement of Arab economic, commercial, cultural and scientific integration since it is the "Arabs' sole option through which they can go into the 21st century."
The leadership also listened to a political report by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa in which he dealt with Syria's recent intensive political activities as well as Arab, regional and international conditions. The leaders reviewed the latest developments, particularly those related to the peace process and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's policy. They analyzed Netanyahu's policy, which they said adopts the method of separate solutions away from the Arab nation's interests, noting that this policy would drag the region's security to grave danger.
The PNF reviewed Israel's offer of conditional fulfillment of UN resolution 425, branding it an attempt to void the resolution, which calls for an unconditional Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon. The leadership also stated that Israel aims to separate the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.
The Syrian PNF reiterated Syria's adherence to peace as is its strategic option based on international resolutions, the Madrid terms of reference and the land for peace principle, and its belief that artificial security considerations made by Israel are an attempt to escape peace requirements.
