Sudanese government, rebels agree to referendum on southern Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 5/7/1998
The Sudanese government and southern rebels meeting in Nairobi on Wednesday agreed to carry out a referendum for self-determination for Southern Sudan.
An official statement issued at the conclusion of two-day peace talks between the Sudanese government and the rebels said the referendum will be carried out under international supervision, but fixed no date for such a memorandum. The two sides also failed to reach a formula for a cease-fire
The two sides did not reach agreement defining the areas that are to take part in the referendum, but they agreed to meet again within three months in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa to discuss issues that are still pending.
