Iraq warns U.N. against prolonging sanctions
Iraq-UN, Politics, 5/6/1998
Taha Yassin Ramadan, the Iraqi vice-president, said yesterday that Iraq has "endured too much and that it is about fed up." He warned the U.N. Security Council that, "Iraq will not wait long until the sanctions imposed since 1990 will be lifted by the United Nations."
Ramadan threatened strong reactions from Baghdad unless the Security Council replies positively to the open message recently directed to it in which Iraq warned "that elongating the sanctions period will be of dangerous consequences."
Meanwhile, the final statement issued by the fifth conference for the Arab popular forces in Baghdad yesterday at the conference's conclusion called for lifting the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq as a step toward solving the Iraqi crisis.
The statement also warned of "the British and the American domination of the international organization and exceeding its responsibility" and role concerning the Security Council resolutions.
The statement also urged the countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference "to stop the effects of the international sanctions imposed on Iraq out of the Islamic ties."
