Egypt criticizes Israel for blowing opportunity for peace
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 5/6/1998
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who, Moussa said, has not yet understood the real Middle East climate.
Moussa added that Netanyahu's intransigent policy towards the Palestinians in the London talks has raised the fears of other parties concerned with the peace process, keeping them from holding talks with Israel despite its conditional offer to withdraw its troops from south Lebanon.
In statements to reporters in Cairo on Tuesday Moussa said that any Israeli offer, whatever it is, lacks credibility because everyone sees what is happening to the Palestinians in their negotiations with Israel and no one is ready to "have the same experience," a reference to the Syrian and Lebanese government that Israel has called on both to negotiate with her.
He called on Israeli politicians to make use of the new situation in the region.
He explained that the only solution for the Palestinian cause is "definitely the establishment of a Palestinian state."
Moussa added that the condition of the stalled peace process is still as it has been for the last 15 months, adding that the failure of the London talks will have an adverse impact on the tense atmosphere prevailing the region.
