Algerian army kills 89 Islamists, Armed Islamic Group kills 11 civilians
Algeria, Military, 5/5/1998
Algerian dailies on Monday reported that armed groups slaughtered 11 civilians in an area south of the capital Algiers, while government forces killed 89 Islamists in military campaigns.
The armed men set up a roadblock in Khamis Malyana district in al-Medea province, 70 km south of the capital. The Algerian daily Le Matin reported that the attackers forced 11 passengers to get out of two trucks and slaughtered them after setting fire to the trucks.
Meanwhile, al-Khabar daily said that nine persons were killed on Thursday and Friday by armed groups in Ein Deflah district. These barriers are set up by the armed groups, apparently to prevent youths from leaving their villages to join the Algerian military.
Meanwhile, the Le Matin and al-Aseel dailies said the Algerian forces killed 89 Islamists in military operations in the last six days. Le Matin elaborated that 35 men from the al-Khadra and al-Furkan contingents of the Armed Islamic Group were killed in the mountainous Sidi Yahya district in Telmesan province, 440 km east of the capital.
In another operation, some 42 extremists were killed in a region located south of the capital, a site which witnessed in April an attack on a military position in which 80 soldiers were killed and another 40 were kidnapped.
Al-Aseel reported that the army also killed 12 Islamists in al-Buyera province to the east of the capital.
