Jordan, Politics, 5/4/1998
In the course of a celebration at the Palace of Culture marking the 45th anniversary of his coronation, King Hussein of Jordan yesterday addressed public figures and representatives of various of Jordanian groups saying Jordan achieved world recognition through steadfastness, perseverance and generosity, despite its limited resources.
Jordan's King rejected the labeling of certain Jordanian political parties as opposition, "There should be an understanding that the prevailing opinion is that of the majority and should, therefore, be respected."
"Lately a phrase has become overwhelming" and "I believe it needs to be corrected by those who intended it" referring to the mention of the label "The opposition parties," the king stated.
"A stand, a certain policy or a certain reality might be opposed," Jordan's King said, "but opposition parties or absolute opposition is unacceptable."
Concerning the suffering of the Iraqi people he said, "Support for the Iraqi people's suffering under sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council should be constructive, but not sensational," adding, "The support should be in a way that helps the Iraqis and relieves their suffering."
King Hussein also hinted at several weaknesses and gaps in Jordanian judiciary which he said should be addressed and reformed so that, "Jordan can become a model in the area."
