Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 5/2/1998

Moroccan Minister of Interior Idris El-Basri said there is a plan underway to destabilize his country, and he accused foreign parties of involvement in these attempts. This comes after reports claiming that Algerian Islamist armed groups have been crossing the Algerian border to Morocco.

El-Basri said security forces are examining all matters that relate to terrorism, adding that Morocco has no intention of interfering in Algerian affairs. He said that what concerns Morocco is being a good neighbor and cooperating on the issues and problems raised between the two neighboring states.

El-Basri said his country will not the lay blame on Algerian newspaper reports that say there of is an armed political group in Morocco like the ones in Algeria, adding that in 1994 he met with members of the internal committee in the parliament in circumstances similar to the current situation, implying there is no truth to the reports.
