Explosion near Israeli embassy in Amman
Jordan, Local, 5/1/1998

A big explosion took place inside a car parking lot in Amman, Jordan on Thursday night as the Israeli embassy held a reception commemorating the 50th anniversary of its statehood. The explosion resulted in damage to seven cars.

Jordanian security sources said the police are investigating the incident. The Jordanian government reinforced security measures at the site of the reception held by the Israeli embassy and at the same time prevented a rally planned by Jordanian opposition parties at the vocational trade union headquarters on the anniversary of Palestine's usurpation.

Meanwhile, the BBC's correspondent in Amman said the explosion was in protest against the Israeli reception, attended by senior secretaries at the Jordanian royal court, Prince Raad Bin Zeid and acting Jordanian Foreign Minister Sami Fahwa representing the Jordanian government.
