Algerian President reiterates rejection of foreign intervention
Algeria, Politics, 5/1/1998
Algerian President Liamine Zeroual on Thursday asserted his country's categorical rejection of "any foreign intervention in the internal affairs of Algeria," stressing that his country honors human rights.
The Algerian News Agency quoted the Algerian President as saying in a Cabinet meeting: "Our national affairs are settled by the Algerian people and the institutions they elected under democracy which characterizes all democratic nations."
Zeroual also called for a social contract and for embarking on a national plan to "fight unemployment."
Meanwhile, an Algerian governmental source said a Chinese company is building a five-star "international hotel" in al-Sanawber club, 20 kilometers west of the capital, Lebanon's al-Nahar daily reported. The source said some 800 Chinese workers will complete the project by the end of the current year so the hotel will be able to host the forthcoming summit of the Organization of African Unity.
