China for gradual lifting of sanctions imposed on Iraq

Spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry has called on the UN Security Council to alleviate the sanctions imposed on Iraq gradually in compliance with UN Security Council resolutions, the Chinese news agency reported.
Xinhua quoted the spokesman as saying that the UN committee on Iraq has to make a just and objective evaluation of its completed inspection operations, noting that its report to this end should be "balanced and constructive." The spokesman highlighted Iraq's positive stand in cooperating during the weapons inspection operations carried out in recent months.
