Jordanian authorities ban opposition rally on 50th anniversary of Palestine usurpation
Jordan, Local, 4/30/1998
The Jordanian authorities banned a rally intended to be held by Jordanian opposition parties today in the context of a program to highlight the 50th anniversary of the usurpation of Palestine.
In a press conference held by the higher commission of 13 Jordanian opposition parties in Amman on Wednesday, the commission's chairman Muhammad al-Auran announced that the rally has been postponed. Al-Auran added that the Jordanian minister of the interior informed him that the government intended to prevent the rally.
A representative of the Islamic Labor Party in the commission, Humam Saeed, said "The ban imposed by the Jordanian authorities should be strongly condemned for preventing the Jordanians from expressing their anger over the 50th anniversary of the usurpation of Palestine while the Israeli embassy in Amman is celebrating huge festivities on this very painful occasion."
The higher commission of the opposition parties circulated the statement which would have been read at the rally, which called for "setting up a united Arab front to liberate Palestine and refuse all peace accords with Israel."
Amman's administrative governor on Wednesday decreed to prevent the convening of the rally which was to be held at the vocational trade union's complex.
