Syria, Iran release final communique on Khaddam visit to Tehran
Syria-Iran, Politics, 4/28/1998

A final communique from the joint Iranian - Syrian higher commission meetings held in Tehran was issued simultaneously in Damascus and Tehran on Sunday evening. It said the two sides underlined the importance of making continued consultations, especially under current circumstances in the region where Israel is escalating its policy of aggression and expansion against the Arab and Moslem nations.

It noted the two countries stressed the importance of developing regional and international cooperation among the states of the region and of enhancing their abilities to isolate Israel's influence in Arab and Moslem countries of the region.

In its third point the communique said the two sides described the unipolar system in the world (meaning the US dominated) as unjust since it placed obstacles in the path of developing countries' advancement, stressing endeavors to reach a just and multi-polar system. It continued that Syria and Iran view the Israeli proposal on conditional pullout from south Lebanon as a plot aimed at deluding the world, creating a sedition inside Lebanon and undermining the unity of destiny of Syria and Lebanon.

The two countries "voiced all-out support for Lebanon in its adherence to Israel's immediate and unconditional withdrawal from Lebanese territories." They called upon the UN security council and the UN Secretary General to put an end to the Israeli occupation of all occupied Arab territories and Moslem territories including Jerusalem.

The two sides also "voiced full support for national and Moslem resistance against the Israeli occupation, regarding the resistance struggle a legitimate right guaranteed by the UN charter and the international law."

The two countries "expressed deep worries over the Turkish - Israeli military and security cooperation which constitutes a threat to the region 's national security," especially neighboring states. They call upon Turkey "to reconsider this cooperation" and to promote regional cooperation among Moslem states, and neighboring states in particular. Syria and Iran expressed concern over the hardships the Iraqi people are undergoing, stressing the importance of "curbing the sufferings of the Iraqis, and for preserving Iraq's unity and territorial integrity." They underlined the significance of maintaining security and stability in the region and called for strengthening inter- cooperation away from any foreign intervention.

The two sides also condemned "Zionist information campaigns launched against Iran on nuclear arms, aiming at distracting the world's attention from the Israeli nuclear arsenal."

They called for making the Middle East a nuclear free- zone, calling on the world community to "compel Israel into putting its arsenal under international inspection."

Syria has expressed satisfaction over the promotion of Iran- Arab ties, and Iran commended by Syria among Arab and Moslem countries for enhancing Iran's role in the Organization of the Islamic Conference. The two sides agreed on holding the next 12th session of the joint commission in Syria before the end on 1998.
