Moroccan students confronted by policemen
Morocco, Local, 4/21/1998

Moroccan dailies on Sunday reported that acts of violence erupted on Saturday at Ein al-Shawq in Casablanca between Islamist students, including members of the banned Islamic fundamentalist "Justice and Charity Society" and Moroccan security forces, noting that the police have arrested six persons including members of the said society.

Clashes erupted when policemen and guards from the national security unit prevented students from getting into the building where a "Scientific Day" was scheduled to be observed under the patronage of the local bureau of the National Union of Moroccan Students.

In recent years, the Moroccan authorities have withdrawn their recognition of the National Union of Moroccan Students after being predominated by members of Islamic fundamentalist groups, especially those who are members in the "Justice and Charity Society" in the faculties of Casablanca, Rabat, al-Muhammadieh, Fez, Morocco and Wajda, al-Nahar said.
