Damascus Declaration Countries to meet
Syria-Qatar, Politics, 4/20/1998
Sources told ArabicNews.com that the conference of the foreign ministers of countries of the Damascus Declaration will convene soon in Doha. Arab diplomatic sources stated that the Damascus Declaration signatory countries will convene soon in Doha, Qatar.
The sources said the talks between Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem al-Thani and Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa led to a Syrian approval for convening the meeting of the foreign ministers of Damascus Declaration countries soon.
Sheikh Hamad left Damascus after a visit that led to opening a new page in relations between the two countries.
Sources in Doha approved of the development in the relations between the two countries as a result of the Syrian foreign minister's visit, saying they are sure that the reasons leading to recent problems between the two states no longer exist. Syria believes that the problems in relations started when Qatar went ahead with convening the economic conference in the Middle East and North Africa last year and Syria refused to participate in it.
The Damascus Deceleration countries include Syria, Egypt and the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
