New negotiations coming between Garang and Khartoum
Sudan-North Africa, Politics, 4/18/1998

At the end of April Nairobi will host a new round of Sudanese peace negotiations. The Kenyan Foreign Ministry said these peace negotiations will take place between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army, headed by John Garang.

These negotiations aim at putting an end to the African state's 14-year civil war, after the previous round of talks ended November 11, 1997.

Talks will focus on the principles determined between the rebels and President Omar El-Bashir's government in 1994 under the auspices of the IGAD organization, which includes Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, and Somali.

They will also address a referendum on self-determination in the south, emphasizing Sudan's unity and the importance of admitting Sudan as a country of multiple religions and cultures.
