Bashir urged to investigate army recruit drownings
Sudan, Politics, 4/17/1998
The Sudanese Lawyers Union sent a report to Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir in which they called on him to intervene and halt false practices in applying the national service law.
In its report, the union called for the formation of an investigation committee to discuss what happened at the National Service Camp at El-Alifgon, where more than 60 soldiers drowned when a boat they were in capsized while trying to escape the camp, according to the government's account.
The union also called for informing the public of the results of the investigation so soldiers' families would feel safe and to reconsider the matter of recruiting students, but not to affect their rights to education.
