Lebanese FM reviews Lebanese situation with France
Lebanon-France, Politics, 4/15/1998
France on Tuesday reiterated UN Security Council resolution 425, providing for unconditional Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon. It expressed worries over the obstacles impeding the Middle East peace process.
In a joint news conference held in Paris on Tuesday between French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine and his Lebanese counterpart Fares Boueiz, Vedrine said that Lebanon looks seriously at the implementation of 425. He added that his discussions with Boueiz dealt with the situation in the ME region, the good bilateral relations linking France and Lebanon.
For his part, the Lebanese foreign minister stressed that the recent Israeli proposal is a matter of propaganda saying "and we should adopt Madrid terms of reference which is the only way for realizing a just and comprehensive peace." He added that Vedrine briefed him on the results of talks he held with Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai. "The Israeli proposal will not change our stand towards implementing UN resolutions 425 and 426 unconditionally," Boueiz stated.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has reaffirmed that the wording of UN resolution 425, which calls for Israel's unconditional withdrawal from south Lebanon is very clear, adding that he sees no need to reword it. Annan's statement was made in remarks to al-Sharq al-Awsat on Tuesday.
