Lebanese resistance targets Balat position
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 4/15/1998
Lebanese resistance forces on Tuesday afternoon attacked an Israeli army position near Balat in the western sector of the occupied part of south Lebanon.
In a statement, the resistance said a resistance group at 4 p.m. on Tuesday rocketed and machine-gunned the Israeli position. Columns of smoke were seen rising from the targeted position.
Meanwhile, Israeli occupation troops renewed attacks against areas adjacent to the occupied zone, especially in the central sector. Lebanese security sources said Israeli artillery in Teir Harfa shelled the towns of Kafra, Yater and Merimin valley and al-Assi road.
The bombardment was accompanied by machine-gun fire from Israeli soldiers and by mock raids carried out at low altitudes by Israeli warplanes. Thermal balloons were also deployed by the Israeli warplanes. Earlier in the day, another resistance statement said the Lebanese patriots carried out several operations against Israeli positions in Beaufort, Balat and Dabsheh.
Earlier reports said Israeli occupation troops continued attacks against areas adjacent to the occupied strip of south Lebanon. Security sources said the occupation artillery in al-Zafata bombarded and Zahrani river bed, al-Rafi mountain, the deserted Lebanese army barracks in al-Nabatieh and Fawka, the outskirts of Kakaayat al-Jessr and the area between Maidoun and Shawkin.
The Israeli shelling was accompanied by heavy machine-guns fire against the targeted areas. Israeli war planes flew at low altitudes over al-Nabatiyeh and al-Tuffah district carrying out reconnaissance sorties.
Later in the evening, Israeli occupation forces expanded their acts of aggressions against areas adjacent to the occupied border strip of south Lebanon.
Lebanese security sources reported that at 8 p.m. the towns of Maidoun, Shawkin, and Kakat al-Jesser, al-Hamra farm and the Litani riverbed came under bombardment by Israeli positions stationed in the middle sector of the occupied strip.
The sources added that Israeli helicopters flew at low altitudes over the western Bekaa, particularly over Abu Rashid Mountain, Barket al-Jabbour, Sarira, Dalja and the Litani river.
Lebanese army units positioned in the area fired at the Israeli helicopters, which retaliated by deploying thermal balloons.
