Palestinian government more convinced Hamas killed Sharif
Palestine, Politics, 4/13/1998
The Palestinian government is more convinced that Hamas bomb maker Mohyiddin Sharif was killed by his own colleagues in the movement who later blasted his body along with a car, Palestinian sources in Gaza said.
The sources noted that in the last few days, Palestinian investigators had managed to uncover the apartment where the shooting of Sharif took place in Ramallah. They said the new findings raised suspicions the Awadallah brothers, members of the military wing of Hamas, had killed Sharif. Imad Awadallah is currently held by the Palestinian government for interrogation, while his bother Awad is still at large. Imad reportedly admitted to shooting Sharif to death.
According to the same sources, the Palestinian investigators found remains of explosives at the apartment which were identical to the explosives found in the car in which Sharif was killed. The investigators also found remnants of food that matched the contents of Sharif's stomach that were found from the autopsy. They also found the nine-mm pistol used to shoot and kill Sharif.
The sources said Sharif was apparently killed in the wake of a conflict that developed between him and leaders of Al Qassam Brigades over an amount of USD 800,000 which was transferred to them.
Meanwhile, a Hamas Internet site put out a letter reportedly written by Ghassan Adassi, the Hamas member who is currently in Palestinian custody and was the one who unveiled the involvement of the Awadallah brothers in the Sharif murder. Adassi wrote that during the explosion of the car Sharif was next to (and was apparently already dead) he himself was inside his house and, therefore, he was not a witness to his death. He claimed that only after torture and threats that he would be accused of killing Sharif for Israel, did he submit the version that his interrogators wanted him to give.
