Algerian Labor Party calls for national symposium for peace
Algeria, Politics, 4/10/1998
Algerian government spokesman Hamrwi Habib Shawki, the minister of information and culture, renewed his country's opposition to receiving delegates affiliated to the United Nations for human rights, adding that the Algerian position rejects any foreign interference regardless of its kind.
Shawki said Algeria can make internal progress concerning human rights.
Meanwhile the Algerian opposition Labor Party said in a statement that its initiative to hold a national symposium for peace, brotherhood and democracy in May, aims at presenting serious and realistic suggestions that can be put into practice as a first step to restoring peace.
The statement referred to allowing the symposium's participants to discuss to the main problem that confronts the country -- armed violence -- with its support, and to discuss the methods authorized to establish standards for ending the crisis.
The statements called the parliament to call on the political parties, national leaders, and concerned corporations to confront the problem directly, among which were leaders of the Islamic Salvation Front, aiming at directing a call to halt the violence and massacres.
