Algerian Islamic revival party calls for applying Arabization law on time
Algeria, Politics, 4/9/1998
The Algerian Islamic Revival party called for applying the Arabization law on time.
The party, headed by Shiekh Abdallah Garaballah called on the Algerian government to apply the Arabization law at its appointed time after the meeting of its national council.
Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed O'yeihia told the Nation's Council last week that the setting for applying the law to require the use of the Arabic language has reached an advanced stage, without specifying what the government's plans to do.
The law requiring the use of the Arabic language in Algeria was postponed several times, most recently at the beginning of 1992. This was embodied by the Arabization law, whose implementation period will end in July.
Meanwhile, Mena reported that 16 people were killed in two new massacres committed on Wednesday in two Algerian villages during the celebration of Eid al-Adha. Including these two massacres -- in which 12 lives were calimed in one and 4 in the other -- the number of assassinated people increased to 52 within three days, mostly women and young girls.
