Syria celebrates 51st Baath Party anniversary
Syria, Politics, 4/7/1998
The Damascus branch leadership of the Syrian Baath Arab Socialist Party on Monday held a central rally at Damascus University Auditorium marking the 51st anniversary of the Baath Party Foundation.
The Baath Party's assistant secretary general, Abdullah al-Ahmar, acting on behalf of the secretary-general, President al-Assad, said in a speech that Syria's achievements at the national and pan-Arab levels are great and cover many spheres.
"Maybe the most remarkable success is... its successes in getting rid of its faults and overstepping all obstacles and hardships on all levels," he said.
Al-Ahmad stressed Arab common action at the formal and people's levels to mobilize the capabilities of the Arab nation in the battle to meet the requirements of the current stage of development as well as to probe future horizons.
"The multi-party system and economic pluralism in Syria are pioneering experiences, from which we could benefit at the pan-Arab level. They will revive certain Arab masses' situation based on unity in diversity and sharing in distinction of major pan-Arab causes," he said
Regarding the peace process, he stated that Syria has always confirmed that a just and comprehensive peace is a strategic option. "Syria backs all sincere efforts to salvage the peace process from the stalemate imposed by the Israeli government, which gives no heed to Arab rights, world will, international legitimacy resolutions and the logic of the current development."
He said peace in the Middle East is attainable after a full Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon, the Bekaa valley and the Syrian Golan Heights to the June 4th line of 1967.
