New step from Sudan toward democracy
Sudan, Politics, 4/3/1998
In a new Sudanese move toward democracy in Sudan, yesterday Abdul Aziz Sedo, the deputy head of the Sudanese parliament, confirmed that the National Conference, the sole political party in Sudan, will be converted to a party similar to the other parties after the public referendum toward the constitution.
Prominent leaders in the Conference said that there would be comprehensive separation of the party from the government and that the party would not obtain any financial support from the country's budget.
The deputy of the National Conference, El-Sherif Zien El-Abedin El-Hendi, confirmed that a legal committee had concluded receiving suggestions for draft laws to regulate parties' activities.
On the side of Sudanese opposition, Sayed Ahmed El-Hussien, the deputy of the Democratic Federal Party's secretary general, said his party will boycott the referendum for the new Sudanese constitution, because the party neither agrees with the constitution nor trusts in the department that will supervise the referendum.
