Mubarak warns against violence as an alternative to peace
Regional-Egypt, Politics, 4/3/1998
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Thursday warned against the consequences of freezing the Middle East peace process, stating, "The alternative will be violence, which no one will escape."
In statements to reporters following his meeting with the President of Uruguay, Mubarak stressed the need to mobilize collective efforts to eliminate the current Middle East peace process impasse.
He urged the US to do more to end the more than one-year stalemate. He praised the European role and the efforts exerted to find a solution, describing the statement recently issued by the European Union in this respect as "excellent."
To this end, the Vatican on Thursday expressed great concern over the stalemate in the Middle East peace process.
In a statement following Pope John Paul II's meeting with the foreign ministers of Egypt and Lebanon, Amr Moussa and Fares Boueiz respectively, the Pope and the two ministers expressed concern over the obstacles hindering the peace process. The statement noted the collective conviction on the need to spare no efforts in order to strengthen peace dynamism, stressing that this can be attained through honoring UN resolutions.
