Regional-Saudi Arabia, Religion, 4/2/1998
More than one million Muslim pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform al-Haj rituals.
The Saudi authorities have prepared fireproof tents for the pilgrims. On Tuesday the Saudi News Agency said the Kingdom has received some 892,395 pilgrimages who arrived by air, 205,279 arrived by sea and another 23,998 arrived by land. On Monday Saudi Arabia said al-Adha Eid will be on Tuesday, April 7.
Meantime, Saudi authorities started assembling some 11,000 fireproof tents. The agency said the Saudi authorities supplied 10,830 tents with 42,000 water pumps to avoid a fire similar to the one that happened last year and caused the death of 343 pilgrims.
The Saudi news agency added that the Saudi crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz on Monday inspected the area where the 1997 fire took place and other facilities provided to ensure the safety of the pilgrimages including a water well of one million cubic meters storage capacity, al-Nahar reported.
