Three-way summit includes Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia
Regional, Politics, 4/1/1998

A small Arab summit will be held during the coming hours comprising Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, and Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Bin Abdel Aziz to discuss the results of the latest efforts to revive the peace process.

The summit will also tackle Arab suggestions for enhancing the US role on all tracks.

Sources told ArabicNews.com that they will hold the meeting in Cairo, after consultations between the three countries' foreign ministers and the secretary-general of the Arab League, Esmat Abdel Meguid, where Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa headed to Saudi Arabia and Syria to meet with his two counterparts and deliver messages to both king Fahd and President Assad.

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat called on the Arab foreign ministers at their meeting in Cairo last Thursday to hold a small or expanded summit, but regarding the disputes between Kuwait and Iraq he preferred to hold a trilateral summit comprising Saudi Arabia, the most powerful of the Gulf states, Syria as the concerned countries with disputes between Israel and Egypt, as the head of the Arab summit.

Meanwhile Moussa presented a report to President Mubarak concerning the results of the discussions between the three foreign ministers that was held in Riyadh over the course of two days.

Just after his return from Riyadh, Moussa said the trilateral meeting was to be held at a proper time to discuss current developments and circumstances in the Middle East and examine different possibilities concerning the current state of the peace process. At the end he added that this meeting was a good opportunity to discuss several subjects concerning the region.
