Rubin: Palestine, Israel well short of bridging gaps
Palestine-Israel-USA, International, 4/1/1998
US State Department spokesman James Rubin said that despite US peace envoy Dennis Ross's recent meetings with the two sides, the Palestinians and Israelis are still "well short of the kind of hard decisions that need to be made to genuinely close and fully close the gaps" between them.
The French Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, noting that the European Union's Foreign Ministers called for increased US peace efforts, characterized the peace process situation as "increasingly critical. The status quo is equivalent to a regression not only in the field, with daily continuation of settlements, but also in the minds."
There is wide spread agreement as expressed by Arab and international countries that Israel by refusing to honor its obligations in signed agreements with the Palestinians had nearly killed the peace process, and intensive Arab efforts are underway to find an appropriate response to this situation.
