Regional, Politics, 3/31/1998
Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdel Meguid welcomed the consultations underway between Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria, saying that the consultations are good and greatly needed at this time.
Abdel Meguid said, "I am very sure that the current feeling of the Arab world is the great concern with the peace track." He said it is important to confront Israeli practices, and strongly condemn them.
He added, "My meeting with the head of the Arab summit, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, has tackled the current situation in the region. Moreover we are pursuing any developments according to the statement of the recent ministerial league's council and the call to hold the council at any time at which the foreign ministers deem that it is the proper time to reconvene the council."
He also said there is no specified date for holding the council, stating that there are continuous consultations today, where consultations and possibilities for an Arab summit are still under examination, and that the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat was the one who greatly expressed his concern with this issue.
Concerning his separate meetings with Kuwaiti deputy Magdi El-Zafiri and Iraqi deputy Nabil Negm, Abdel Meguid said he discussed developments concerning the meeting of the foreign ministers' council.
