Saudi, Syrian, Egyptian, foreign ministers meet on Arab issues
Regional, Politics, 3/31/1998

A three-way meeting was held on Monday by Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal in Riyadh.

The three ministers held consultations and exchanged views on Arab conditions and the peace process.

Arab diplomatic sources in Riyadh said the three foreign ministers held a closed-door meeting, during which they discussed means "to draw a plan for an Arab move to come up against the collapse of the peace process as a result of the Israeli government's position and its violations of signed obligations and accords."

The source did not rule out efforts by the "three ministers to convene an urgent Arab summit," adding that a possible mini-summit would comprise Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and possibly Morocco.

The sources went on to say, "The results of the three ministers' meeting will determine whether the summit will be mini or plenary."

Diplomatic sources in Riyadh said the meeting was held following telephone calls made by President Mubarak to Syrian and Saudi leaders following his meeting with the US Middle East peace process coordinator Dennis Ross in Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday, al-Safir reported.

An Egyptian diplomat said the three ministers will discuss peace process developments in light of the US proposals conveyed by Ross aiming at reviving the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
