Jordanian young men will be able to vote
Jordan, Politics, 3/31/1998
An amended electoral law in Jordan will allow Jordanians of 18 years old to vote.
"Jordanian voters are going to be able to cast ballots at any voting center in their perspective constituencies using only identity cards," Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah al-Nusour told reporters. "Counting of votes would also be carried out at the voting center," he added.
The Jordanian government had proposed to enact the law in the year 2001, he said. The drafted electoral law has already been presented to the parliament for endorsement.
"According to the drafted law Jordanian expatriates abroad as well as military and security members would not be allowed to vote," Nusour said.
Jordanian Interior Minister Nathir Rashid during the press conference told reporters that Jordan's government sought to modernize the electoral law after seeing many loopholes in the current law.
In other remarks, Deputy Prime Minister al-Nusour told reporters that Jordan was doing its best to win the release of Jordanian prisoners in other countries, including Israel.
He also announced that the Information Ministry is working to amend the law to allow Arab satellite channels to operate in the country.
