Syria, UNDP sign Agriculture accord

An agreement between the Syrian government and the UNDP was signed on Sunday in Damascus providing for the program to offer technical aid to the Ministry of Agriculture and major agrarian reform projects to support rural development in the Syrian al-Hoss mountain area in the context of the technical cooperation program with UNDP for 1997 through 2000.
The agreement was signed by the Syrian state minister for planning and the UNDP's resident representative in Damascus. The project aims at strengthening efforts exerted to improve social and living conditions for peasants in the al-Hoss area, and to ensure facilities needed to get the loans so as to increase agricultural production.
The project also aims at acquainting women with hand skills through providing them with necessary equipment.
