Moussa: We cannot coexist with Israeli situation
Regional-Egypt, Politics, 3/26/1998

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said at the Arab League that the Israeli attitude toward the peace process weakens the peace process and hurts its credibility. He said, "We will not let the peace process approach the point of death. We should restore it to its right track."

This will not be achieved except by the cooperation of all the parties involved, including the US, Russia, Europe, and the Arab countries, he said, adding that all should believe in the importance of the peace process and its necessity.

He stated that the Israeli policy is the only factor that does not encourage the peace process to continue according to Oslo, Madrid, the principle of land for peace and the UN Security Council resolutions and called for Israel's implementation of these measures.

He said the international community has extended its arms to insist on the implementation of peace, which is closely related to the stability of the area. Cooperation in such a matter is not only important for the benefit of the Middle East but has international ramifications as well, Moussa said.

He said, "We demand this to end the Israeli - Arab struggle forever, a matter that cannot be ended except by parallelism, equilibrium and just solutions -- not a solution for one of the parties, as this will not be a solution accepted by anyone."

He called for Arab solidarity against Israel, "This is the political aim that should be achieved, for we should not leave the matter as it is, now, in the hands of a policy that tries to blow up the peace process from its roots."

Concerning Israel's refusal of US and European initiatives, Moussa said, "We insist upon our steadfast attitudes against the retreats concerning the peace process. We are not hoping against hope, but we demand the implementation of agreements."
